Charlton Heston, RIP

Charlton Heston, RIP

OK, Steven Colbert has probably the best tribute to the man. I had mixed feelings -- after all, he was in some decent science fiction films. He was in some amazing blockbusters that I loved throughout my childhood, although I watch them now, and prefer Cecil B. DeMille when he's directing someone like Gary Cooper. A friend of mine pointed out that he had an amazing screen presence -- which he did, but you know? I think John Wayne was better at that kind of presence. I've not seen Touch of Evil (a weak point, I know), so perhaps I haven't seen his best performance. I did like the piece I heard on NPR that tied his performances in post-apocalyptic sf films to the whole NRA thing. Makes some sense to me. But mostly, I just think of the man's unwavering masculinity.

OK, now that this has been up awhile and there's less risk of ruining it for people...
