AHA bleg

AHA bleg

Um, does anybody know which airport one should fly into for AHA? Because I think I'm going after all. And also, does anybody need a roommate for the 2nd? I've never been to NYC, so am totally clueless, and also, do not have money for this trip, so any advice is good. Oh -- and I am looking into taking the train in from Newark, DE -- after I see if friends there can put me up for a night, so any advice there is good, too.

Not a NYC native here, but of the three airports (JFK, Newark, LaGuardia), LaGuardia is the one closest to the conference hotels. Public transit from JFK to the hotels is the easiest, from the other airports one has to transfer several times so it's better to take a cab or van.

Train is also doable; if you're making Amtrak reservations online, your destination should be Penn Station.

The AHA website has a lot of information on logistics and such, and I have a rundown of sessions of interest to medievalists on my blog here: http://cliosdisciple.blogspot.com/2008/10/medieval-history-at-aha.html.

I can't imagine that it would be worth your while to fly. I'd just figure out the nearest place to pick up Amtrak and then take the train into the city. You'd arrive at Penn Station, which is 2 miles (very walkable if you have rolling luggage, or an easy cab or subway from the headquarters hotel). Plus you have a completely flexible ticket.

I agree with T.E. - take the train. Buy a Metrocard at Penn Station and take the subway or splurge on a cab to the conference to get your bearings.

If you do fly, JFK is far easier to get to and from by public transport than La Guardia.

3 things:

1) Newark, DE? Awesome, from a former Blue Hen.

2) take the train. WAY easier and (as has been pointed out) a relatively quick walk/ cab/ subway to midtown from Penn Station.

3) congrats on the AHA (if it is what I assume it is)!

you can get to Penn station from Newark Airport pretty easily (can't remember the details but I just figured it out for my sister). But yes, I'd take the train if I possibly could. It's much more relaxing, if you get over the microwaved food.

The AHA thing on how to eat cheaply looks pretty good.

I'll be there, so I hope I see you!

Matt- it is that thing, so thanks! We'll see how it goes, and I'm keeping my fingers crossed for another friend of ours, too (that he will be going, and for the same reasons, that is)

Susan, I hope I see you -- if I'm there for more than the one day, I'll message you. It will be nice to hear how the new gig is going!
