Ok, this just pisses me right off

So I went to Wordpress to start a new Blogenspiel.

Some [epithets deleted] stole my name.

Seriously.

I very much doubt it was the result of independent thought, and the address is blogenspiel, but the name of the blog is something else. Most annoying? It hasn't been updated in two years.

grrrr.

Nice way to get traffic, though.

I don't suppose you could contact her and see if she'd be willing to take hers down.....

alternatively, you could call it anotherdamnedmedievalist.wordpress, with blogenspiel in the title, etc. so it would still get found. I doubt anyone's got that one yet.

I did! But seriously, it's just rude. I do hope that the woman has stopped blogging by choice, and not by accident or some other horrible thing, and left a comment. But I don't see that anybody would take a name that already has a real life and internet presence unless they were trying to get more traffic -- or unless they were particularly clueless.

The blog was also operating under a CC license, so I think that there are problems there.

I was going to suggest looking at the first post on the blog to see if she explained her name. But what kind of blog doesn't have an archive function?

Anyway, from her sidebar, it looks like she's on twitter, too. In fact, she may be near me: she's with FEMA, and her last update puts her in Joplin! If I see her over the weekend....

I felt the same way when I went to start up my blog, and found that "notoriousphd" was already taken. By someone arguably more famous than me, but who isn't all that dedicated a blogger.

well, seeing as how I really did come up with the name (and realized after I started it that phonetically, it should have been bloggenspiel), and it was associated with ADM and linked all over the place by then, it feels like being plagiarized.

Honestly, I kinda doubt this person actually did take it from your blog - I could see it as independent thought, because there doesn't seem to be anything about the person at all remotely linked to this corner of the blogosphere. And it also doesn't look like the person was monetizing the blog to want the traffic.

I mean, it's annoying, but I don't think it's worth demonizing this person. A lot of people wouldn't think to google the term and see if there's already a blog with that name, especially since it's not the name of the blog per se, and the address was clearly available.

For Jonathan - at one point, a lot of bloggers I knew disabled archive functions to foil Google spiders. So not everyone chooses to keep an archive.

NewK -- it could have been a suggestion from someone else, or a bot. But not checking = cluelessness, I think. Not worth demonizing, but seriously annoying.
