Just Kill Me Now
Well, I had it all explained, and then blogger ate it. I'll tell you all tomorrow. Let's just say that it helps to explain yet another reason why junior faculty get cranky and impatient. On that front, let me just say that one of the hardest parts about teaching history is convincing people that knowing a lot of shit about history doesn't make you a historian.

Tout-à-fait d'accord. C'est le plus difficile, et je vous assure que dans l'université française, c'est un vrai défi de faire comprendre ça!

Merci, zid! It's both comforting and depressing to know that the problem exists across geographical bounds. I quite like your blog, too! (and would reply en français, but I read it better than I write it!)
no problem if you write in english, I can read it without difficulties. The most important thing is to understand each other. And it's what happens. So: let's go!
Nice blog too! I try to discover the way-of-blogging of american and english medievists...
Zid
sorry: I mean "medievalists"
I knew you could read the English, zid ;-) It's my French that is very rusty. My research leans more towards the "German" side of the Carolingians, so there is not so much written in French. What is your specialty?
I studied a lot hagiography for carolingian and ottonian period. Now I work on studia diplomatica, i.e. studies on medieval archives. I've just published a book about Mendicant orders and economy in Lotharingia.
Add that to trying to convince people that there is value in studying history (or literature, culture, sociology, and anything that doesn't give one a freakin' "skill set"). Keep fighting the good fight!
