Who's going to the AHA?

Going to the AHA?

Hey, all -- got way too much to do, but was wondering ... are any of my fellow bloggers planning on being at the AHA in January? If so, is there interest in meeting up in an honorable fashion that allows us to keep our pseudonymity if we desire?

Addendum: If people are interested, I can try to reserve pub/dim sum/some other space in advance. An ex-student actually opened a nice little pub near the Space Needle a while back, for example. A friend on Local Arrangements might also know what restaurants have been approached for discounts ...

Pseudonimity-wise, I was just thinking people could put a pseudonym name tag over their badges if they so wish?

Is this just an invitation to anonymous bloggers? I'll be there. If I promise not to tell?

Oh -- I meant any historian who blogs, but hope that the tenured, non-pseudonymous folk will respect the anonymity of others, if they're so asked. I was thinking of meeting in a local pub or something?

Some of us "out" bloggers aren't tenured, either (though I get the distinct feeling that we're a minority, sometimes). I really do understand the sense of vulnerability that comes with being public about professional (and non-professional) issues.

I am... but you already know me sans pseudonym! ;-) I'll actually be sitting on the other side of the table in the great cattle pen for the first time, what a thought.

Whoops! Replied wrongly, totally not thinking - brain not awake yet. It's New Kid on the Hallway who knows me.

New Kid and I kind of know each other by name from listservs. If you do the same kind of stuff I do, we might know each other. I hope to be on the supplicant's side of the table a few times, but it shouldn't matter.

This is almost enough to entice me to go to the AHA. Almost.

If you're ever around, it would be nice to meet up ...

No AHA for us lit-weenies, but are you going to be at Medieval Academy this year?

I half feel like I know both you and NewK by name but just haven't put four and four together.

I wish I were going, but the Shifting Frontiers conference is this year (it's a biennial conference) and I don't think I can afford a second conference that requires flight. So, I'll be in Champaign-Urbana. I'll probably be at MA next year -- and who knows? Maybe I'll find funding to go to Kazoo. Doubtful. I really need to get a couple of conference papers ready so that I have an excuse to go places.

Just wanted to say how much I love the idea of putting pseudonym tags over the regular name badges!

I'm ashamed to say that I don't even know where the MA is this year - am much more likely to go to Kzoo, which I will be doing again this year. I still find the MA intimidating, for some reason (but I've only been once). Am also (I think) going to a small conference in February, which is plenty of presentation preparation for me!

It's in Florida, I think.

Sorry to say (er, perhaps glad to say, since I now no longer am doing the job hunt thing) I will not be attending the AHA shindig this year.

Which is too bad, since I am, together with Another Damn Medievalist, one of the founding members of the Annual AHA Blogfest (established January, 2004).

Yes, it was just ADM and I at that first get-together, but in my book, when even two bloggers get together that counts as a blogfest. And, yes, I know ADM's alter-ego.

This is really funny -- I just realized that the only two bloggers who have met me in person AND know my pseudonym are also the only two male, politically conservative medievalists I know. And yet, in our microcosmic medieval world, we all get along just fine! Wish you were goiong ot be there, H.D., but I'm glad it's because you got a gig last year!

I'll be at the AHA. I'm even giving a paper. And, I'm not anonymous. (Although I might take the blog down when I go on the job market.) So, if we're meeting somewhere, I'm game. I solemnly promise not to reveal the identities of any anonybloggers.

Neat -- that's three of us, at least! The funny thing is that you and Jonathan Dresner (our third confirmation, so far) are giving your papers at the same time. We're all in different fields, at different career stages ... now we need someone with tenure!

Would love to get together. When and where? Sorry I missed the initial Jan. 2004 meeting ;-)

In addition, H-Net is hosting a session that includes blogging (shameless self-plugging) on Thursday afternoon.

Aha! Another person I know from the internet, but not IRL -- I'll keep you posted! More good news -- Sepoy may be coming, too -- anybody want to work on Timothy Burke?
