What on earth were you thinking?

What I want to know is what on earth the other guy said to him to provoke such a reaction!

Sad in the end, because France were all over Italy like a cheap shirt in the second half and ET, but there was no way they were going to win on penalties with their best three penalty takers off the field.

Arguably, there was no way they would win on penalties with Barthez on the field. I did hear there was a nipple twist involved, but I'm still stunned.

Agreed about Barthez, I'm afraid.

Although I don't understand what the hell he was thinking (and I don't care how many titty-twisters he suffered), my main reaction is amazement at the force of that head-butt. I watched it over and over, thanks to TiVo... you can actually see the muscles coil up in his neck. It was less a head-butt than a carefully focused header.

It was really pretty impressive, in terms of bar-fighting skills. And no, no excuse. I just keep thinking about how weird it is. If I were a conspiracy theorist, I'd say his family had been threatened ... he tried to get himself subbed with the shoulder injury, then this. Amazing.

Yeah, seriously. This was pretty outrageous. The guy must have said something totally unbelievable. Zidane has a reputation of being such a reputable player--why would he ruin his retirement?

My best bet is that Materazzi said something about his father being a harki.

There are other famous headbutts, crotch stomps and red cards in his past, so despite recent clean playing, he is historically known for having a temper and doing unsporting things. But in the last 10 minutes of his career! Cripes! What could Materazzi have possibly said or done that Zizou wouldn't have experienced before in his career? Racial comments, yo mama's, etc.. are daily occurances in footie. I wasn't rooting for Les Bleus, but that was a sad, mystifying moment.

Chirac has nothing but praise for Z., and says that he'll tell him so at the breakfast wingding he's throwing for the team. I'd lay a wager that Zizou will not be at that event, nor any other for a good long time.

It was bizarre indeed.

Still, forza Azzurri!

Mazzerati did it on purpose. This is a typical trionfo all'italiana -- obtained through lowly means, and totally undeserved.

don't throw the italians under the bus because a frenchman got out of control.

According to some reports Materazzi used a particularly bad yo mama and it so happened she had just been admitted to a hospital, making it a little harder to withstand.
