Timing is Everything

Timing is everything

So I'm supposed to leave on a research trip to London on Wednesday. I hope to kibbitz with many colleagues and write the introduction to the Big Project (no contract yet, but they are asking me about artwork and for a blurb for the advert), and maybe even get something done on a second article.

Today, I arrived home to find a Jury Summons. For two dates during the period I'm going to be gone.

*rhymes with 'clucking bell'*

Update: Thanks to a wonderful clerk, who ran the paperwork up to the judge just before today's sessions started (so I wouldn't have to wait to find out), and a kind judge, I am flying off to London as planned. Thanks!

There is usually a way to postpone. . . at least where I live.

And how long in London?

I just served jury duty. There's usually a way to postpone if you nicely express your desire to serve but explain you already have purchased tickets. I'd suggest taking a copy of your tickets and going to the court house. Here, the judge wanted lots of proof, so a letter from your Chair on letterhead stating that you're doing work-related research might be helpful. (Yeah, I know, just what you need to deal with this week while packing.)

Susan -- 5 weeks! the last one not necessarily for work, though.

TD, thanks -- I was planning on showing up with the ticket in the morning. Unfortunately, my chair and the dean are out of town ... I may have to ask our new President, unless the ticket is enough. Seriously, I don't mind jury duty. I mind that I get called and have been empanelled, but the minute the lawyers find out I have an advanced degree and have strong opinions on things like capital punishment and whether the legal system treats minorities fairly? They kick me off. Waste of my day.

To make it clear -- I think we have one of the better legal systems. But I think that there are lots of inequities that can come down to issues of race and economic status.

Glad this has worked out! I'm currently thinking of gathering bloggers on the 16th; if that works for you drop me a mail at my work address (home one will BOUNS UR HOTMAILZ) and we'll make it so.
