I know, I know ...

I know, I know

This is what you get when you toy with your template and forget to save the old version first. It's a work in progress. After three and a half years, I figured I needed a change. And crap. I just realized, speaking of changes, that I forgot to add a hyphen to my latest book review galleys. Damn.

And yes, it's the first day of classes and I have much more important work to be getting on with.

I, for one, like the new design, exp. the color palette.

The color is fine, but the lack of contrast between the background and header text is weak.

Love the banner, though.

I like it!

Thanks!

Suggestions on fixing the lack of contrast?

Agree with Acephalous, although they are lovely colours.

Sometimes the only thing you can do is to play around with similar toned colours until you find something that works. Marianne's Color Codes is a handy web site I use a lot. Alternatives might be to have the headers boxed in a contrasting pale background, with or without a border. (But then you might have to lose the red underline.)

Playing with HTML and CSS is one of the best procrastination activities I know. I've been doing it longer than I've been blogging...

Wow! I've just looked at this on my home monitor -- it's hugely different than my school one. Much darker. Now I can see the problem. The fonts don't show up the same way, either. All of the headers and blogroll are supposed to be in something else -- dunno why they are not showing up the same at home, as I'm running the same software, I think.

Colors look awesome from here!

I'd go with a slightly lighter shade of petrol blue for the overall background, as it comes out as pretty dark on my monitor. For the header, I'd be more inclined to try white, if you want to stick to plain text, as there are so many shade of blue in that gorgeous header that pretty much any blue is liable to bleed into the background a bit.

Nice to see you keeping up academic standards by doing this on the first day of term, though ;-)

OK, so I'm bored and my cleaner hasn't shown up . . . if I don't find something to do, I might actually have to do the cleaning.

Having looked at the source code, you're specifying colonna MT as the font for your headers: h1, h2 and h3. Unfortunately, colonna is (to the best of my knowledge) only distributed for free with the premium editions of MS Office, so it's quite possible that it's on your machine at work courtesy of the M$ campus agreement, but not on your home machine because you've got whatever version of Office that came with the machine when you bought it. As a result, colonna's not classed as one of the "browser safe" fonts that you can pretty much guarantee will always display as intended on any OS/browser combination.

Oh, and white, very pale blue or green and orange/tan all contrast very well with the header . . . and yes, I really hate cleaning.
