You're a holiday

You're a holiday

Hi all -- I'm not posting much because I am on a busman's holiday, working and lying low until the semester starts. More posting soon!

What is a "busman's holiday"?

A holiday where one ends up doing work. I went to visit a friend in a place I'd never been, and we ended up writing our syllabi and prepping classes.

Actually, I LOVE busman's holidays when they involve a fella academic. My scholarly soul sister and I used to go off to a cabin on the coast every spring break, with her Volvo loaded down with books, food, and wine. We weren't allowed to open the wine until we'd worked 12 hours, but we kept working for two or three hours after we had opened it. And we'd talk about work until the wee hours.

Alas, Special K got very offended by the whole thing. His take on it was that I didn't have enough time for him, but I was eager to go off on "vacation" with her. That's not quite right, but I gave it up anyway. Sigh.
